World University Games and championships |
Every two years Australian University Sport (AUS) selects teams to represent Australia in the World University Summer and Winter Games.
The University of Queensland and UQ Sport are actively involved in participating in the competitions leading up to the games.
Summer Universiade (World University Summer Games)
The Summer Universiade is held every two years (odd numbered years) under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The Summer Universiade comprises competition in 10 compulsory sports and some optional sports determined by the host. These events are staged in various cities throughout the world.
In 2011, the Summer Universiade was held in Shenzhen, China from 11 - 23 August. The compulsory sports that were contested included athletics, basketball, fencing, football, gymnastics – artistic and rhythmic, swimming, diving, judo, water polo, table tennis, tennis, volleyball. The optional sports included: open water swimming, taekwondo, sailing, badminton, shooting, golf, cycling, chess, aerobics, archery, beach volleyball and weightlifting.
AUS selected teams to represent Australia at the Summer Universiade in consulation with National Sporting Organisations.
Winter Universiade (World University Winter Games)
The Winter Universiade is held every two years (od under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The Winter Universiade comprises competition in 10 compulsory sports and some optional sports determined by the host. These events are staged in various cities throughout the world.
In 2011, the Winter Universiade was held in Erzurum, Turkey from 28 January - 6 February 2011. The compulsory sports contested included alpine skiing, snowboard, cross country skiing, ski jumping, nordic combined, biathlon, ice hockey, skeleton, figure skating and short track speed skating.
AUS selected teams to represent Australia in the Winter Universiade in consultation with the relevant National Sporting Organisations. The Australian team does not necessarily compete in all sports.
World University Championships
World University Championship events are held every two years (even numbered years) under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). These events are staged in various cities throughout the world.
