The UQ Sport Fitness Centre has everything you need to keep fit. We cover cardio, weight training, group fitness, martial arts and indoor sports including squash, badminton, basketball futsal, handball and the list goes on. Whether your focus is yoga-inspired flexibility, letting loose with a dance class or if you prefer an intense, sweat session, we are guaranteed to have a fitness class or short course to suit your fitness style.

The Fitness Centre is the place to come for making a booking, buying a membership or if you have any UQ Sport-related question or query. Our friendly staff are always on hand to offer advice and show you around. We also have Wi-Fi available throughout the Fitness Centre.

Andrea Ashford

QUALIFICATIONS: M. Couns., Dip IYTA (International Yoga Teacher’s Association.

EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Andrea has been practicing Yoga personally for 40 years and has been teaching for 7 years. Her classes are based on the Hatha style of Yoga, incorporating a flowing transition from posture to posture. This ensures that a gentle focus is maintained throughout the class and maximises the benefits of strengthening and stretching the body as well as calming and relaxing the mind.

  • Ann Marie Dunn

    QUALIFICATIONS: Completed Pilates Instructor Certificate in Oregon, USA.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: I started Pilates classes following years of chronic lower back pain. The results of diligent work were amazing. My increased body awareness and new health motivated me to complete my Instructor training. I have been teaching and helping my students since 2004.

  • Cecily Ann Slade

    QUALIFICATIONS: Level 2 Yoga Teacher.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: I have practiced yoga for most of my life but spent most of my career in business and corporate management positions and in my own ventures. I became a yoga teacher in 2006 and have taught yoga at UQ for 9 years. I believe profoundly in what yoga has to offer and I feel that my life experience contributes a unique and valuable perspective to students. I am also the author of a book about yoga entitled Transforming Ageing - a story of yoga lived.

  • Courtney Barnes

    QUALIFICATIONS: Group Exercise Leader, Fully Certified Les Mills Body Attack Instructor.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Courtney became a fully certified Body Attack Instructor in February 2014. Coming from a dance background, it was the fun body attack moves and awesome music beats that made her want to become an instructor herself. 

  • Eloise Dray

    QUALIFICATIONS: BSc Physiology/ Full certification in classic pilates from in Balance studio USA: 450hrs training in Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chairs, Ladder Barrel and Spine Corrector/ Various continuing education courses (injury and pre-natal programs).

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: After testing various sports (from French boxing to African Dance and Tango), I found that Pilates summarized best my love for movement. I received my balance full-apparatus training and stayed as an instructor in Sarah Aldrich Pilates Studio (in Connecticut, USA), where I gave private/duet lessons on equipment and instructed mat classes until I moved to Australia in early 2012. 

  • Emillia de Conceicao

    QUALIFICATIONS: Certificate III and IV in Fitness; Certified Les Mills Instructor.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Has been teaching BodyBalance classes for 5 years.

  • Janette McWilliam

    QUALIFICATIONS: Certificate III in Gym Instruction and Group Fitness (Freestyle and Pre Choreographed), Pilates.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Over 25 years in the fitness industry, currently teaching Group Fitness and Pilates. I have held positions as a Group Fitness Manager, Gym Instructor, Personal Trainer and have taught many different types of Freestyle Classes including Step, Hi/Lo, Fitball, Sculpt and Toning, High Intensity Circuit, Boxercise, Khai Bo, Indoor Cycling, Reebok Slide, and many years ago I worked for the Life Be In It Walking Club.

  • Jess Thrower

    QUALIFICATIONS: Certificate III in Fitness, First Aid and CPR.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Jess has been instructing group fitness classes since 2007. She competed in aerobics from a young age and trained as a classical ballet dancer for 14 years. This background has given Jess a passion for fitness and working out to a beat. 

  • Kathleen Marcoux

    QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced diploma of Yoga teaching, certificate in prenatal yoga and conscious birthing, and thousands of hours of continuing education completed in asanas, pranayama, meditation, anatomy for yoga, yoga therapy. Also holds a Bachelor of Geography and a Masters degree in Environment and planning (from Laval University, Quebec, Canada)

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Kathleen teaches alignment-based vinyasa yoga. Her approach to asanas (yoga postures) is fluid and incorporates the principles of optimal body alignment. Connecting movements with breath is emphasized and pranayama (breath work) is part of each class. Classes are an opportunity to strengthen, open, and bring vitality to the whole body, and to cultivate clarity and focus.

  • Leah Beath

    QUALIFICATIONS: Level 1 and 2 yoga teacher training -International South Pacific Yoga Association.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Leah discovered her love for yoga over 15 years ago with a dedicated and rewarding practice that has helped to deepen her understand of the many benefits, facets and principles of yoga. Completing her teacher training 5 years ago under internationally acclaimed Lance Schuler she enjoys to help her students grow, change and advance in their asana practice whilst educating them on the importance of breath working in unison with the postures. Leah also fostered a strong focus on mind body connection encouraging students to cultivate presence of mind throughout their practice. Leah will challenge and inspire you to reach your greatest heights and move past the limitations of the mind.

  • Lin Mckenzie

    QUALIFICATIONS: Has studied under Heather Agnew for Ashtanga Yoga.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Lin is a qualified yoga instructor and has followed her own yoga practice for the past 15 years. Lin believes that yoga is a journey within to the discovery of our true nature, peace and inner bliss. A sacred transformational tool to expand the hearts and live with spirit. Lin is truly devoted to the yogic lifestyle and spreads love, happiness and friendship with everyone she meets. She also has a deep interest in the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine and RAW diet. Lin enjoys sharing yoga and fun with supportive team from UQ Sport, we laugh, we support and we share the joy of life. 
     

  • Marian Cavanagh

    QUALIFICATIONS: Yoga Teacher Level 1 and 2, Prenatal yoga, Restorative yoga, Chair yoga, TEFLA, M. App Sci (Social Ecology), M. Env Ed.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Marion has been teaching yoga for 7 years, previously an environmental educator, english teacher, and event manager.

  • Miia Wilson

    QUALIFICATIONS: Zumba Kids and Zumba Kids Jr Instructor 2014, Barre Attack™ Instructor, Zumba Instructor, Dance Teacher, Highly Commended (equivalent to Australian Honours), International Dance Teachers Association Great Britain, Master of Arts (Choreography, Aesthetics, Visual design) Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance (London), Teacher Studies, University of Jyväskylä (Finland), Dancer’s Professional Degree, Turku’s Conservatory (Finland).

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Dance has been a big part of my life for over 30 years now. Growing up in Finland, I studied Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary dance. After becoming a professional dancer and performing in musicals and dance productions in Finland, I moved to London to gain more experience and to study my Master’s Degree in Dance. I have also concluded a year of teacher studies in Finland that included behavioural aspects and dance teacher studies in UK with International Dance Teachers Association. For five years I danced, choreographed and taught dance in busy and inspiring London before moving to Australia. I now own and manage a dance school, teach dance and fitness for all ages. I’ve been a qualified Zumba Instructor since Feb 2012 and absolutely loving the fulfilled, cardio workout.

  • Moya Harvey

    QUALIFICATIONS: Zumba Fitness & Zumba Fitness Toning, Bellydance Instructor.

  • Nirvana Pilkington

    QUALIFICATIONS: Hatha Yoga training with Kate Pell and Zara Matthews, private tutorage with Renae Stevens in Shakshin Ghatashta and Anti-Gravity Yoga, Creative Vinyasa Flow with Vanessa Rudge of Being Yoga, Mindfulness based training with Tammy Williams and Anti Gravity Yoga Wings (Fundamentals 1 and 2, AGY 1, Suspension Fitness 1, AGY2).

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Movement and play were a large part of Nirvana’s childhood (dance, drama, yoga, sports and massage) and continued to permeate her adult life. While working as a high school teacher, massage therapist and being a single parent, she explored ways relieve the stress of daily life, stumbling across circus arts and finding a return to yoga. This reignited her passion to further her studies in understanding the body and its connection to the mind better. She continues to enjoy learning from many teachers and styles of yoga, constantly training and updating her skills. Nirvana also travelled to Montreal to complete teacher training in AcroYoga and completed her AY Fit instructing here in Sydney. AcroYoga is her passion. She loves the community and connection this art form brings to practice. Nirvana teaches yoga, acroyoga and antigravity yoga with various yoga studios and venues in and around Brisbane.  

  • Omni Mcgrath

    QUALIFICATIONS: Group Centergy Instuctor, Booty Barre, Certificate III and IV Fitness, Pilates Matwork Level 1 and Advanced Mat, Pilates Small Equipment, Franklin Method, Certificate IV Massage Therapy, First Aid & CPR, Certificate IV Solomon Yogalates - 400 hour yoga and Pilates Level 2 Teacher Training.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: I have been studying and practicing Yoga since 1994, and in 2001 undertook an intensive 400 hour 6 month training in yoga and Pilates with the Yoga Pilates Training Academy of Australia, which incorporated training in both the Astanga and Iyengar styles of yoga along with Pilates mat work and “Yogalates” the fusion of  the two modalities into the one workout. In 2010 I studied remedial massage to apply myofascial release techniques into my movement classes and in 2011 completed Certificate III & IV in Fitness. In 2012 I trained with Studio Pilates International in Pilates mat, advanced mat and Pilates small equipment. I have also studied the Franklin Method in abdominal training, Booty Barre and Group Centergy. I have been teaching yoga, Pilates and Yogalates since 2001 and more recently, Barre. 

  • Tanya Zappala

    QUALIFICATIONS: Level 2 yoga and AcroYoga teacher.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Tanya has been teaching since 2004. She originally trained under Radiant Light Yoga and continued to learn from other amazing teachers including Kate Pell, Tamara James, Simon Borg Olivier, John Friend and Julie Smerdon. From these great teachers Tanya’s teaching evolved towards a style of Vinyasa with an alignment based focus. Tanya has also trained extensively in AcroYoga under creators Jenny Sauer-Klein and Jason Nemer in 2008, AcroYoga is a fusion of yoga, acrobatics and Internal Arts. Tanya has taught both Vinyasa and AcroYoga at the Woodford Folk Festival, Brisbane Yoga Festival, Byron Spirit Festival, Evolve Festivals, Dancing Ground Festival, Island Vibe Stradbroke Island, and over in New Zealand at the Kawai Purapura Yoga Conference in Auckland. She regularly teaches workshops and retreats locally here in Brisbane and around Australia.

  • Tony Nocon

    QUALIFICATIONS: Teacher training at Yoga Vidya Dham, teacher training with Satyananda Yoga.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Tony first discovered yoga while on a holiday in Byron Bay over 12 years ago, his curiosity lead him to his first class. After seeing a sign with yoga on it, he decided to give it a try without any expectations or previous knowledge of the practice. During his first class he had some interesting experiences and insights and then decided to continue practicing and lived with his first teacher in Byron Bay. After reading Yogananda’s book autobiography of a yogi he decided to travel in India and lived on various ashrams and completed his first teacher training in India at Yoga Vidya Dham in 2006. He has completed further studies with Satyananda Yoga.

    Tony teaches a dynamic style of Vinyasa Yoga, Traditional Hatha Yoga, Meditation and powerful deep relaxation techniques such as yoga nidra. Tony enjoys helping his students evolve their personalities, strengthening their self esteem and transforming their lives through the practice of yoga and meditation. Tony is accredited with International Yoga Alliance Silver Level.

  • Viv Tulloch

    QUALIFICATIONS: Certificate III Fitness.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Five years teaching group fitness classes (cycle). I co-developed and am now sole choreographer for a new fitness class called Grind, which is a combination of high intensity stationary cycling and core. Previously worked in outdoor fitness as a ski instructor and white water rafting guide. Besides cycling, I'm in love with yoga, running, resistance training and kayaking.

  • West Loh

    QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor Degree Human Movements, Masters Degree Exercise Physiology, Fitness Australia accreditations in group training, exercise physiology and rehab, Les Mills International certification Combat, Jam, Step and Attack.

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Fourteen years in the industry, training, teaching.

  • Yvette Fillery

    QUALIFICATIONS: Yoga Teacher Training course. 

    EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND: Yvette first stepped into a hot yoga studio in 2006, it took a few months of walking past before she found the courage to walk in the door. When she did, she never looked back, completing her first 200 hour Teacher Training course in 2010. Yvette has been teaching full time ever since and continues to engage in further yoga studies. She has trained with a variety of Australian teachers in the Bikram method, power vinyasa and mindfulness. She brings a substance to her classes that express how yoga is both physical and emotional. She believes that yoga challenges you to step out of your comfort zone; and when you do, life unfolds in ways you’d never imagine!
