Anthropometry

The International Society for the Advancement of Kinathropometry (ISAK) has defined and approved an international anthropometry accreditation scheme, which is now taught in over 40 countries worldwide. The ISAK accreditation scheme is based on the concept of a four-level hierarchy. UQ Sport offers:

ISAK Level 2 Anthropometry - full profile

Level 2 Anthropometry is designed for those who wish to offer their subjects a more-comprehensive range of measurements. A Level 2 anthropometrist can demonstrate adequate precision in three base measures, eight skin folds, nine segment lengths, 13 girths, seven bone breadths and has a broad understanding of the theory of anthropometry and its interpretation.

A key element in it is the objective maintenance of quality assurance by requiring that all levels have to meet initial technical error of measurement (TEM) criteria in an end-of-course practical examination followed by the meeting of further TEM criteria on the measurement of 20 subjects to indicate satisfactory repeatability of measures.

Curriculum structure

Total time 44 hours, comprising of:

  • 10 hours of theory
  • 14 in-course practical (with instructor contact time)
  • 20 hours post-course to collect 20 full profiles within six months.

Pre-requisites

  • Accreditation in ISAK Level 1 for at least six months.

Body Composition Short Course

This is a practical, hands on course focusing on providing participants with the skills & knowledge to competently assess the physique traits of their clients. It is based on internationally recognised standards of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK), a group who offer physique assessment courses across some 30 countries. At the end of course, participants will be able to:

  • Competently landmark specific anatomical sites and undertake precise skinfold & girth measurements
  • Assess a clients body composition
  • Appreciate their own measurement error & how this can be used to assess if real changes in body composition have occurred
  • Effectively make use of readily available software for databasing & automatic reporting of clients results

This course is accredited by Kinect Australia to earn 2 PDP’s (KA1624) and Fitness Australia to earn 7 CEC's (02223FA0212)

Dartfish background

Since its development in 1999, dartfish software has been used worldwide across a number of fields including sport training, coaching, education, healthcare and media. Indeed 60% of medals won in the 2006 Winter Olympics involved athletes who had used dartfish in their Olympic training!

Dartfish workshop

This workshop is designed to support the postgraduate coaching program at The University of Queensland. It will include an introduction to dartfish and involve practical training in movement analysis, biomechanics and skill acquisition. The workshop will aid coaches in their understanding of dartfish and its application to their sport.

ECG analysis and interpretation

The unit is suitable for students who wish to gain knowledge and confidence in interpreting 12 lead ECGs and care for clients who require cardiac monitoring. It is suitable for any student entering a position in a hospital setting (nursing, cardiac scientist, anaesthetics, medical, paramedics, exercise physiologists, physiologists). You can also download a detailed course outline (PDF).

It is of high importance that students entering a clinical role in a hospital setting be required to expand their knowledge and skills in the area of ECG performance and analysis to assure quality health service to the public/private sector.

Cardiovascular disease was the leading cause of death in Australia in 2000, accounting for 39% of all deaths. Because much illness and premature death from cardiovascular disease is preventable, it has been a focus of public attention and health policy, and in 1996 was named a National Health Priority Area.

Early detection of both life threatening and abnormal arrhythmias, through accurately performed and analysed ECGs, is vital for treating patients and reporting anomalies/emergencies in a timely manner. This will result in a more efficient and effective health service provided to the patient.
