UQ Sport Appreciation Program

Learn all about Australia’s favourite sports with the UQ Sport Appreciation Program

The UQ Sport Appreciation Program (PDF) is a joint initiative, run by The University of Queensland’s School of Human Movement Studies and managed by UQ Sport.

The foundations of the program aims to provide international students attending The University of Queensland a unique ‘Australian Experience’, where they will learn all about Australian sport and it’s impact on Australian culture. 

The UQ Sport Appreciation Program consists of:

1. 3 x two hour interactive sessions held at The University of Queensland, St Lucia campus:

  • Session 1: History and Culture of Australian Sport Seminar
  • Session 2 & 3: Students will select a sport and learn all about its history, rules of the game and practical skills

2. Watch it all in action! During the duration of the course students will attend a State or International match involving their chosen sport.

Students will be required to choose an Australian sport as their main focus during the program; sports include:

National Rugby League (NRL)

The NRL is rated as the best and toughest rugby league competition in the world. It is the elite club level of the game in Australia. More than three million fans attend NRL matches throughout the season from boutique suburban grounds to state-of-the-art stadiums across the country.

Program dates: September 2010 - Broncos vs Raiders

Australian Football League (AFL)

AFL or ‘Aussie Rules’ has been played for over 100 years at various levels throughout Australia and today is the most popular sport competition in terms of TV ratings in the nation. The AFL is currently the fourth-most attended professional sports league in the world in terms of attendance per match, with an average attendance of over 38,000.

Program dates: August 2010 - Lions vs Sydney

Cricket

Cricket has been an established team sport for hundreds of years and more than 100 countries are affiliated to the International Cricket Council, cricket’s international governing body. In Australia, while other sports are more popular in particular areas, cricket has been described as the ‘national sport’ and has had a role in forming the national identify.

Program dates: November - Australia vs Sri Lanka

Netball

Netball is a non-contact generally indoor sport similar to, and derived from, basketball. It is usually known as a women’s sport. Netball is now the pre-eminent women’s team sport (both as spectator and participant sport) in Australia and New Zealand.
