UQ Sport is a registered National Coaching & Officiating Training Agency (NCAS) with the Australian Sports Commission (ASC). We offer a range of training initiatives to cater for coach education and development.
The University of Queensland School of Human Movement Studies also offers high performance coach education in conjunction with the ASC.
Coach Education seminar series
After the successful debut of the series last year, UQ Sport will be hosting a series of seminars offering teachers, industry professionals, coaches, students and athletes the opportunity to learn from experts in coach education. More information on the Coach Education seminar series.
Beginning coaching general principles
This course is offered online free of charge by the ASC and is designed to introduce coaches to the fundamental principles of sports coaching. You must complete this course prior to undertaking intermediate coaching general principles.
Course curriculum includes:
- The role and responsibilities of a coach, planning, safety, working with parents, communication, group management and inclusive coaching practices.
The course takes approximately six hours to complete, and there is assessment included within the course. Coaches have six months to complete the course after they register. The online course can be used as part of the training for coaches within the Active After-School Communities Program. Enrol all year round through the ASC website.
Intermediate coaching general principles
The intermediate coaching general principles program has replaced the Level 2 coaching general principles. This course has been designed to provide experienced coaches with the fundamental principles and scientific knowledge underlying sports performance.
Course structure
Participants have the option of enrolling in the whole course at once, or opting to enrol module-by-module. The module option is suitable for those coaches whose National Sporting Organisation requires them to only complete particular modules as part of their coaching accreditation.

Each module is written in an applied manner with a range of case studies and examples to assist coaches in their learning. A range of coaching practitioners, sports scientists, coach educators and academics were involved in writing the manual, including a number of Australian Institute of Sport and University of Queensland specialists.
This course is delivered via correspondence only.

Please note: Completion of a general principles program alone does not grant individuals Level 2 NCAS accreditation. Each National Sporting Organisation (NSO) determines the requirements for their sport to gain accreditation, and the general principles program may complement the NSO course requirements.
ASC Presenter & Assessor courses
Presenter course
Skilled and confident presenters are an integral component of the coaching and officiating education system. This course has been designed to train course presenters in the skills required to deliver effective, quality coaching and officiating courses within the NCAS and National Officiating Accreditation Scheme (NOAS) schemes.

Assessor course
The ASC Assessor course was developed to assist assessors improve their skills in assessment of participants.

ASC Coach Mentor Training Program
The National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) and National Officiating Accreditation Scheme (NOAS) aim to improve the standard of coaching and officiating in Australia by providing a structured pathway for coach and official education.
Mentoring can be a valuable tool to help coaches and officials improve their knowledge, skills and confidence, and achieve the requirements for accreditation. The aim of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Mentor Training Program is to develop and enhance the skills of mentors working with coaches and officials in community or high performance environments..
At the completion of this program, the mentor will be able to:

plan and organise the mentoring relationship

assist mentees to develop and improve.

Rugby Coach Education workshop – New in 2011!
There are currently no workshops available at this time.
The UQ Rugby Academy and UQ Sport have engaged industry professionals to bring you a rugby coaching course that will explore the latest developments in the game. A combination of classroom and practical workshops will ensure coaches of all levels leave the course with a range of skills and knowledge that can be implemented into their own coaching program, and put them in good stead for the 2011 season. Introductory Officiating General Principles
The Introductory Officiating General Principles course is offered online free by the ASC and is designed to introduce officials to the basic skills they will need to officiate effectively. To enrol in the course go to the Australian Sports Commission’s online learning portal. From the portal you can obtain further information on the course requirements.
The Introductory Officiating General Principles course can provide the first step towards accreditation. NSO’s can provide more information on the sport specific requirements to achieve officiating accreditation.
Advanced Officiating General Principles
