On 21 May, 2009 the UQ Sport Annual General Meeting was conducted and the members unanimously endorsed to wind up UQ Sport and transition into UQ Sport Ltd.
Effective June 9, 2009, UQ Sport moved from being an unincorporated association to a wholly owned Company (Limited by Guarantee) of the University of Queensland. The new legal entity, UQ Sport Ltd commenced trading on July 1, 2009 and continued to operate all existing business portfolios. These changes saw the make-up of the UQ Sport Board change along with a number of other governance changes such as the adoption of a new constitution. (PDF 217KB) .
Our Board
Dr Douglas Porter - Director (Chair)
Dr Porter brings a wealth of international experience in administration management to UQ Sport as the Director and Chair of the UQ Sport Board.
- He has a BA (Hons) from Durham University and a Hon DEcon from The University of Queensland. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
- Dr Porter's consultancies have included commissions in West Africa (1976-78), Malaysia and Singapore (1980), West Indies (1981), Mexico (1984), Fiji (1997), Oman (2006) and a number of Australian universities. He was a consultant to the OECD Institutional Management in Higher Education Program in 1979.
- He was a Member of the Governing Body of the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA), Chair of the QSA Tertiary Entrance Committee and Chair of the QSA Finance Committee, and was a Director of Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre Limited from 1997 to 2008.
- He is a Director of UniQuest Pty Ltd, Uniseed Pty Ltd and associated Trusts and of UniMutual Limited. He is Chair of St John's College Council, is a Vice-Patron of UQ Sport and Patron the UQ Rugby Football Club.
Mr Richard Powell - Deputy Chair
Richard has 20 years experience across health, employment services and banking in a variety of leadership roles.
- He started his career as an exercise physiologist and biomechanist and has held senior executive roles in injury management and occupational rehabilitation, employment services and international business development, private health insurance, and retail banking.
- He also has 28 years experience in sports administration and governance at club, university and Olympic levels.
- Richard has a Bachelor of Arts (double major in Human Movement Studies) and a Master of Business Administration. He holds professional membership of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAIDC).
- Richard holds directorships of the Queensland Olympic Council (President) and is Chairman of the Queensland Sports Foundation.
- He is also an accomplished international athlete - he was a member of the Australian rowing team from 1985 to 1992 when he successfully competed in two Olympic Games, and achieved a silver medal in the 1986 Commonwealth Games.
Mr Bryan Pryde - Executive Director
Bryan Pryde’s experience in senior management has developed over the past 20 years through roles across private, public and not-for-profit organisations within hospitality, student, sports and venue management.
- His expertise in professional communication and coaching has contributed to his success in guiding a range of organisations, stakeholders and staff through significant operational and organisational change.
- Bryan recently managed the Sleeman Sports Complex, a 32 hectare venue comprising the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, the Chandler Theatre, the Main Arena for indoor sports as well as elite and community training facilities. In addition, he was responsible for the coordination and completion of the strategic, corporate and business planning processes for Stadiums Queensland venues.
- Early in his career he was involved with the Edmonton Rugby Union and held key positions in event services and corporate hospitality at the Adelaide Grand Prix. Executive responsibilities with international laundry and textile companies provided business and operational expertise in multi-site operations, finance, production and asset management. The move to the University of Calgary Students’ Union created unique challenges associated with the management of a student organisation, student services and redevelopment of the MacEwan Student Centre.
- Bryan holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Brunswick and is a NLP Certified Practitioner. Bryan is looking forward to entering the new phase of his career at UQ Sport where he will utilise his many years of experience to take the organisation in a positive direction for years to come.
Mr Gary Hogan - Director
Gary brings 25 years of global business experience and a lifelong passion for sport to the UQ Sport Board.
- Gary spent 25 years with the internationally successful travel company, Flight Centre, including taking the company to the United Kingdom in 1995 where he spent 10 years as Managing Director and equity partner.
- He celebrated many successes in the United Kingdom, including Flight Centre being awarded third best company to work for in the United Kingdom by The Sunday Times. Gary was also awarded ‘Best for Leadership’ of the top 100 companies.
- During his time in the United Kingdom Gary was also involved in Australian Business into Europe (ABIE) and was responsible for the largest corporate acquisition undertaken by Flight Centre. On his return to Australia, Gary held the position of Global Chief Information Officer on the Senior Executive Team.
- He has a strong belief in systems and structures which facilitate the greatest personal growth and performance of people not only in the workforce, but in their lives in general.
- With a lifelong passion for sport Gary has played A Grade Rugby (UQ), pennant grade tennis and is a single figure handicap golfer.
Mr Ming Lee - Director
Ming has over 10 years experience as a practicing solicitor across national top tier, mid tier and international legal firms specialising in construction law.
- Ming has a Graduate Diploma in Law, Bachelor of Law (Hons IIA) and a Bachelor of Science (Hons IIA)
- Previously, Ming was a Member of the University of Queensland Sport Board (2000 - 2009).
- With a passion for the study of martial arts, Ming currently holds a 2nd dan black belt.
Mr Tim Crommelin - Director
Tim has over 40 years experience in the stockbroking industry as well as having a keen interest in golf, football and cricket.
- Tim was appointed General Manager of the Girdis Group of Companies (Property Development and Investment) in 1974 before joining Morgan Stockbroking Ltd (now ABN AMRO Morgans) in 1986.
- He has been on the Board of Trustees for Brisbane Grammar School, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Australian National University Investment Committee, Director of the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, a Member of the Senate of The University of Queensland, Chairman of ABN AMRO Morgans Holdings, and Chairman of ABN AMRO Morgans Foundation.
- He is a Fellow of the Society of Land Economists (FSLE), a Fellow of the Securities Institute of Australia (FSIA), and a Trustee of the Queensland Division of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia.
- Tim holds a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of Queensland, and has completed the Advanced Management Program at the University of Hawaii.
Mr Mika Hayward - Director
Mika is the Director of Operations for the Faculty of Health Sciences at The University of Queensland - which is a leader in its field regarding the development of innovative models of service and education.
- Mika initially joined the university as a lawyer specialising in research collaborations and intellectual property. He became the Faculty Executive Officer of the Faculty in 1997 and since that time has played a major role in numerous initiatives which have extended the university’s scope of operations by advocating innovative models for engagement.
- Mika has been The University of Queensland’s Project Director for the development of the Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence (PACE) since its inception in 2004. PACE is a major infrastructure development designed to align the university’s School of Pharmacy with the health system, industry and professional groups.
- Prior to joining the university Mika worked in private practice as a commercial lawyer.
- Mika has an honours degree in law from the Queensland University of Technology, a Masters in law from the University of London (LSE) and a Master of Business Administration from The University of Queensland.
- He also sits on the Board of PrimEd Pty Ltd.
Pr Doune Macdonald - Director
Doune Macdonald is a professor and Head of the School of Human Movement Studies at The University of Queensland.
- The School of Human Movement Studies is one of seven schools within the university’s Faculty of Health Sciences. It is widely recognised as the leading unit of its kind in Australia, conducting multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching, research and community and professional service programs on movement, physical activity and health that are of the highest international standard.
- Professor Macdonald’s background is in health and physical education and her research interests and work have addressed the challenges of curriculum reform and its impact upon teachers and teaching.
- More recently her interests have moved outside the formal education sphere to broader questions of physical activity and young people.
- Professor Macdonald serves on the editorial boards of Sport, Education and Society and Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, and is Vice-President of AIESEP (International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education).
- She also serves on the Boards of St. Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ School and the UQ Rugby Academy.
Mr Andrew Hines - Company Secretary
Andrew has almost 20 years experience across financial accounting, statutory and management reporting, taxation, business analysis and stock control.
- He joined UQ Sport as Business Services Manager in 1999, having spent the previous nine years across a range of tax, financial, and management accounting specialist roles within Suncorp.
- In his role of Business Services Manager, Andrew is responsible for the development and delivery of the organisation’s business and operational plans across the key areas of finance, information technology, legal and insurance.
- Andrew has particular expertise in statutory reporting and financial modelling, business planning and project management, and staff development.
- He has a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from the Queensland University of Technology and is a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA).
