Competitive Squads

Swim squad program

The swim squad programs cater for swimmers of all ages, abilities and ambitions, with a focus on competition and recreation, encouraging participation and fun. The program is structured into three distinct swim squads each requiring different levels of swimming ability and commitment. All squads help swimmers develop habits which support an active, healthy lifestyle while also providing them with a clear pathway to achieving their goals.

While having a clear focus on developing junior and age group swimmers into competent well rounded swimmers and champions of the future, the program is also open to UQ students wishing to commit to a squad training environment.

This program is conducted at:

  • UQ Sport Aquatic Centre all year round in a 50 metre heated pool, providing training opportunities for short and long course. Access is also available to a number of dry land facilities and gymnasium; and
  • Milton State School pool (Baywater Street, Milton) between September and April in a five lane, 25 yard pool, specifically dedicated to the training squad.

All swimmers in the squad are encouraged to swim in race style bathers and will require, as a minimum, their own training fins and water bottle.

Meet our swimming coaches

The friendly staff at the UQ Sport Aquatic Centre will assure that in every lesson, every person receives expert advice and tuition from the highest quality teachers available. Find out more about our swimming coaches.

Competitive squad training

Junior squad

Swimmers must demonstrate good technique over 25 metres of butterfly, and 50 metres of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. The junior squad sessions are aimed at developing good technique in all strokes, developing race and pacing skills and educating the swimmers in correct training etiquette and dry land stretching techniques. Sessions are all planned to provide variety to the swimmers as well as being undertaken at different intensities.

Swimmers will swim between 1 – 1.5 kilometres and will be encouraged to attend 2 – 3 times a week, increasing over the summer months. The Milton State School program is specifically directed at the junior squad level, with swimmers progressing to the higher levels at St Lucia.

Swimmers in this squad will be encouraged to compete through the UQ swim club nights and at school and interclub carnivals.

Intermediate squad

Swimmers in the intermediate squad focus on correct technique and advanced skill development while gradually increasing distance and endurance each session. Intermediate squad swimmers undertake more complex sessions and swim at higher intensities, requiring a commitment towards their swimming, with a minimum of 3 sessions per week. Progression into this level is largely based on skill acquisition and training attendance.

This squad will have a higher focus on interclub carnivals and State championships.

Senior squad

Senior squad trains with the aim of qualifying for State or National Championships and the sessions are structured to reflect this. Swimmers should have a clear understanding of what their goals are by this stage with much more time spent training for specific events. A commitment to 6+ training sessions per week is required.

Fin Fit

With the aid of fins (flippers), this hour-long program is designed to work the legs and abdominal muscles utilising kick board exercises. BYO fins (fins are available for sale at the pro-shop).

Deep water running

With the aid of a buoyancy belt, deep water running is a non-weight bearing aquatic exercise, which closely resembles land base running, without the impact.

Swim

A programmed swim session that is designed to improve both your technique and fitness. Each session is part of an integrated weekly program.

Run, ride and transition training

Running, riding, transition and wind trainer sessions all form part of UQ Sport’s triathlon training program. Each session caters for the novice to the intermediate/advanced age group competitor.
